In one of their four trades during the 2024 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions moved up in the sixth round to select LSU defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo. This pick, executed by general manager Brad Holmes, marked his final selection of the three-day event.
As Wingo prepares to earn his spot on the roster, he will aim to establish his role during the upcoming training camp, which starts in late July. So far, the Lions are very pleased with the rookie’s performance and potential.
Coach Terrell Williams Praises Rookie Mekhi Wingo
One coach particularly impressed with Mekhi Wingo is his position coach, Terrell Williams. Williams highlighted the rookie defender’s explosiveness, noting, “I don’t want to really make comparisons because that can set unrealistic expectations. But what I can say is that he’s an explosive player who understands his limits and knows how to leverage his strengths. He’s got incredibly quick hands, can rush the passer, and I believe he’ll be a solid run defender for us. I’m thrilled about where we picked him and what he’s shown so far.”
Williams didn’t stop there. He also mentioned Wingo’s advanced skills and inside/outside versatility. “Inside and outside. That’s important because players with positional flexibility create challenges for offenses—they never know where these guys will line up. Wingo has done a great job so far and is really advanced for a rookie in terms of understanding hand usage, pad level, and rushing techniques. Given his size, he plays in a way that maximizes his effectiveness. We’ve been very pleased with his development.”
This positional flexibility not only complicates things for opposing offenses but also enhances Wingo’s chances of seeing significant playing time early in his career.
