REPORT: Lions to sign ‘AAF sensation’ QB Luis Perez

According to Benjamin Allbright, the Detroit Lions will be signing QB Luis Perez.

No corresponding move has been announced as of now. Expect one once the Lions make this move official — likely tomorrow.

UPDATE: Lions release QB David Fales to make room on the roster.

The 25-year old went undrafted in 2018 out of Texas A&M-Commerce. The Los Angeles Rams signed him as an UDFA where he had a brief stint on their practice squad.

Perez is most known for his time in the Alliance of American Football. While playing for the Birmingham Iron, he amassed 135 completions on 258 attempts (52.3%), 1,460 yards, five touchdowns, six interceptions and a 66.0 passer rating.

After the league folded, he once again tried his hand in the NFL. Most recently, he was with the Philadelphia Eagles but was waived back in early May.

Obviously, not the best sign that he hasn’t even been able to crack a 90-man roster for the preseason. Perez will be a perfect fill-in for Thursday’s last preseason game. He will likely get some more NFL film for other teams to see while keeping the other Lions quarterbacks healthy.

With Perez still maintaining practice squad eligiblity, GM Bob Quinn may be looking for a future signal caller to stash and develop.
