REPORT: Lions release LB Devon Kennard

According to Mike Garafolo, the Detroit Lions are releasing linebacker Devon Kennard.

Kennard was going into the last year of his three-year deal and was a team captain a year ago. His release saves the Lions $6.5-million dollars and allows the team more wiggle room to upgrade the position.

Mostly a pass rusher at the JACK backer position in Matt Patricia’s scheme, Kennard posted back to back seven-sack seasons since singing in Detroit. Despite decent production, the 28-year old never really was a viable threat on the edge. He started 30 of 32 possible games for the Lions since signing a free agent deal in 2018.

Given the Lions woes getting to the quarterback, something needed to change. Expect another free agent acquisition or draft pick to be used on a pass rusher.
