REPORT: Lions CB Darius Slay plans to report to training camp

A day after it was reported that DT Damon Harrison would end his holdout, Detroit Lions CB Darius Slay appears he will follow suit.

Slay had skipped mini-camp and the offseason workouts in hopes of landing a new deal. The two sides could still negotiate and come to an agreement.

After Slay signed an extension with the Lions three years ago, the Pro Bowl corner is currently sitting as the 13th highest paid average yearly salary cornerback in the NFL this year. He still has two years left on his contract but he felt that he was outperforming his salary.

In his career, the seventh-year coverman has 17 interceptions with 91 pass defenses — most in the NFL during that span. He is also the only player in the NFL to have at least 13 pass defenses in each of the last five seasons.

Make no mistake, Slay is arguably the best player relative to position on the Lions roster. Making him happy should be a big priority for GM Bob Quinn. It’s also just very rare and unorthodox for a non-quarterback player to receive a new deal with two years left on a contract.
