Detroit Lions sign DE Romeo Okwara, waive DE Anthony Zettel

The Detroit Lions have claimed former Giants DE Romeo Okwara off waivers. Surprisingly, they released DE Anthony Zettel in a corresponding move.

Contact details were not disclosed.

The New York Giants waived Okwara after signing DT John Jenkins on Tuesday.

It’s no secret the Lions are in desperate need of a pass rush — GM Bob Quinn must feel that Okwara can do the trick.

Zettel had a nice 6.5-sack year just a season ago and most assumed he would be a key cog in the defense. However, it was an ominous sign of things to come with Zettel playing in the final half of the exhibition game against the Cleveland Browns.

Okwara was a 2016 undrafted rookie free agent out of Notre Dame. He played in all 16 games with four starts his rookie year.

The 6-foot-4, 276-pound pass rusher only played in six games for the Giants in 2017 after sustaining a knee injury — accumulating just three tackles before he went down. In his career, he has 28 tackles and one sack.
