In a somewhat surprising move, the Detroit Lions have released RB Zach Zenner.

GM Bob Quinn and the Lions must obviously like what they have in rookie RB Ty Johnson. Johnson was likely to be the third option in the backfield which would render Zenner’s special teams ability moot by not being active on game days. It could also be a kind gesture by Detroit to give Zenner an opportunity to land elsewhere.
As a fan favorite of many, Zenner has always been valuable in a reserve role. The fifth year player amassed 685 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in spot-duty over the course of his career — all with the Lions.
