Head coach Matt Patricia had this to say about the seventh-year veteran running back:
“For us, Theo is a great professional, he’s a great player, he did a lot of great things for us through the course of the years and we have a lot of respect in the world for everything that he’s done. But in any of those situations, we’re going to try to do what’s best for the team.”
Cutting Riddick saves $3.66-million in cap space with only $962,500 in dead cap.
In his career, the 28-year old has 1,023 rushing yards and five touchdowns. His real value has always been in the pass game though where he accumulated 285 receptions, 2,238 receiving yards and 14 touchdown catches.
Some highlights of RB Theo Riddick's career w/ the #Lions:
– Most receptions (281) and 2nd most YAC by a RB in #NFL since 2014
– 4 consecutive seasons with 50+ catches — longest streak for any active RB in NFL

Going forward, the Lions will likely rely heavily on the likes of Kerryon Johnson, CJ Anderson, and maybe even rookie speedster Ty Johnson to help replace Riddick’s pass catching ability.
